Resumo: This paper contains a detailed mathematical analysis of the impact a depreciation of the national currency has on the Trade Balance. The wide process of substitution occasioned by the very depreciation is carefully studied. After having presented the theoretical model and its application to the specific case of Portugal some conclusions are added: — The effects of the depreciation are strongly dependent on the unknown values of the elasticities of Portuguese demand for imported goods. — Benefits can only arise with a high rate of depreciation which can be risky, thinking on the subsequent inflation.
