Resumo: | Irony functions primarily as a communication tool, used to criticize or question the status quo. The visual arts can be a form of communication and, as such , are likely to be built according to the rhetoric of irony. The relationship between art and the irony is uncommon until the late nineteenth century but in the early twentieth century with the artistic avant-gardes , the irony becomes a breeding ground for formal explorations in the field of art , including sculpture. This research aims to identify and understand some presence of irony in portuguese sculpture of the twentieth century. In this context we see that portuguese art was influenced by external artistic movements, but is also a result of all internal historical, political and social situation. Irony has taken different forms and functions over time but the attitude of irreverence regarding what was established, was extremely important in the transformation of art in the twentieth century |
