Resumo: The objective of this article is to present the results of a study in which mural painting was used in art classes to promote reflections on science, technology and society based on the theme “Safety and health in rural work”, aiming at scientific and technological literacy. The application of the activities was all developed in the Art classes, with students from the 9th of Elementary School 2, from a Countryside School, in the municipality of Castro located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. To develop the activities, the five didactic sequence steps adapt ed from Oliveira (2014) were followed, articulated with the three pedagogical moments of Delizoicov and Angotti (1991), in which, based on the muralism content, we tried to lead students to understand and to raise awareness of the need for prevention to prevent accidents at work in rural areas. The methodological approach was a qualitative one of an interpretative nature, and is characterized by a pedagogical intervention research. The results showed that through the appreciation and analysis of mural paintings, students were able to form critical thinking, with ability to argue and build knowledge on social issues related to science and technology, which imply consequences for the way of life in society rural. Through their mural artistic productions, they were able to express themselves and thus sensitize other people, contributing to students’ scientific, technological and artistic literacy.
