Resumo: The Industry of Files in Vieira de Leiria evolved naturally since its starting phase of manufacture, with familiar and handicrafts features, until the phase of machinery and the consequent technological progress that projected it to abroad markets. This industry always maintained familiar features and the “secret” of the art, hard work and its unusual capacity for commercial management are well expressed in the History of União Tomé Fèteira Ltd – a Files’ Company. It is undoubtedly a reference name for the historical knowledge of files’ industry in Vieira de Leiria. Our study focuses on the period from 1820 to 1943 because it represents the origin, growth and consolidation not only of this company but also of the files’ industry in general.

A característica familiar que esta indústria sempre manteve, o “segredo” da arte, o trabalho árduo e uma invulgar capacidade de gestão comercial estão bem expressos na História da Empresa de Limas União Tomé Fèteira Lda., nome de referência incontornável para o conhecimento histórico da indústria das limas em Vieira de Leiria.
