The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data has ushered in a new era in the pharmaceutical sector. This review delves into the broader potential applications of AI in pharmaceuticals, which span far beyond the extensively explored drug discovery. In recent years, AI has made remarkable strides in revolutionizing clinical trials (CT) and 3D printing drugs, and can support the industry's transition to continuous manufacturing (CM). In addition, the ability of AI systems to analyze vast amounts of data is enabling their use in pharmacovigilance (PV) and drug repurposing (DR). As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative that frameworks and guidelines are established to govern the development and use of this technology. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been at the forefront of shaping these frameworks to ensure the traditional quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines. Therefore, this paper also aims to summarize their current regulatory perspective on AI in pharmaceuticals and to highlight their efforts to ensure the responsible and beneficial integration of AI in the pharmaceutical industry.O presente documento integra uma análise dos estágios realizados na Farmácia São Sebastião e no INFARMED, I.P. com base na metodologia SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), bem como a monografia "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in the Pharmaceutical World- quo vadis: a regulatory perspective”. O avanço da inteligência artificial (IA) e do processamento de grandes volumes de dados despoletou uma nova era no setor farmacêutico. Esta revisão visa explorar as potenciais aplicações IA na indústria farmacêutica, que vão muito além da amplamente dissertada aplicabilidade na descoberta de novos fármacos. Nos últimos anos, a IA tem feito progressos notáveis na revolução de ensaios clínicos e na impressão 3D de medicamentos, podendo, de igual modo, alavancar a transição da indústria para o fabrico contínuo de medicamentos. Além disso, a capacidade dos sistemas de IA em analisar grandes quantidades de dados está a possibilitar a sua utilização na farmacovigilância e no reposicionamento de fármacos. Perante toda esta evolução, torna-se imperativo estabelecer diretrizes sólidas para orientar o desenvolvimento e a utilização desta tecnologia. A EMA e a FDA estão na linha da frente na definição destas estruturas, de forma a assegurar os tradicionais padrões de qualidade, segurança e eficácia dos medicamentos.
