As such, it has been researched over the years, with different approaches and in different contexts. This study aims to provide an overview of empirical studies published on the issue of police decision-making emphasising the context in which it occurred. Given that this is a profession whose action has importance for the individual, the organization and even the community, it seems crucial that much attention is given to it. Research with the purpose of studying the decision-making processes of police officers, with implications for practice, is relevant and necessary. To this end, with the purpose of providing an overview about what has been studied about this topic, we conducted a systematic review of the literature, with the aim of providing the most objective and transparent record possible of the literature, so that academics and professionals can take advantage of it to guide their future decisions. We found some trends in research, namely a tendency to study uncertainty and operational contexts, with different characteristics, some more prevalent. Altogether, we conclude that police officer decision-making has been an area of great interest for researchers, but that it still has a lot of room to grow and expand. Some themes are regularly studied, but from different perspectives, and, sometimes, the empirical results even are contradictory. A more concise and coherent approach of the literature would be beneficial. Likewise, we found that certain contexts are not very studied and we considered that they deserve more attention from the investigators because, certainly, professionals from this field would very much benefit from the study of decision-making in any context they might have to deal with. Either way, it became clear, to us, that this topic attracts much attention from different areas of knowledge, which gives way to a diversity of approaches and conclusions.A tomada de decisão é um tema importante. Deste modo, tem sido investigada ao longo dos anos, com diferentes abordagens e em diferentes contextos. Este estudo tem como objetivo providenciar uma vista geral dos estudos empíricos publicados sobre a temática da tomada de decisão policial, enfatizando o contexto no qual a mesma ocorre. Dado ser uma profissão cuja ação tem importância para o indivíduo, a organização e até a comunidade, parece crucial que muita atenção lhe seja dada. Investigação com o objetivo de estudar os processos de tomada de decisão dos polícias, com implicações para a prática, é relevante e essencial. De modo a fornecer uma visão do que tem sido estudado em relação ao tema, conduzimos uma revisão sistemática da literatura, com o objetivo de providenciar o relato mais objetivo e transparente possível do que tem sido estudado, para que investigadores e profissionais possam tirar proveito do mesmo para guiar as suas futuras decisões. Encontrámos algumas tendências na investigação, nomeadamente uma tendência para estudar contextos de incerteza e contextos operacionais, com diferentes caraterísticas, algumas mais prevalentes. De modo geral, concluímos que a tomada de decisão policial tem sido uma área de grande interesse para os investigadores, mas que ainda tem muito espaço para crescer e se expandir. Alguns temas são regularmente estudados, mas de perspetivas diferentes, e por vezes chega-se a resultados empíricos contraditórios. Uma abordagem mais concisa e coerente da literatura seria benéfica. No mesmo sentido, encontrámos certos contextos que pouco são estudados e que consideramos merecerem mais atenção por parte dos investigadores pois, com certeza, que os profissionais da área em muito beneficiariam do estudo da tomada de decisão em qualquer contexto com que tenham de lidar.
