Ao compreender a relação entre estas variáveis, pretendemos explorar os vários impactos do trabalho emocional no envolvimento no trabalho e na identidade ocupacional para encontrar formas de prevenir tais impactos negativos, promovendo o bem-estar da nossa amostra em estudo. Identificámos uma lacuna nos estudos sobre este tema em Portugal, particularmente no contexto dos bombeiros. Assim, 100 bombeiros Madeirenses e Açorianos foram convidados a responder aos seguintes questionários: Emotion Work Requirements Scale (EWRS) (Best et al., 1997), Emotional Labour Scale (ELS)(Brotheridge & Lee, 2003), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) (Schaufeli et al., 2002; Shaufeli & Bakker, 2004) e Three-Factor Scale of Social Identity (TSSI) (Nascimento & de Sousa, 2017). Os dados obtidos foram analisados utilizando a regressão múltipla. Os resultados revelaram relações entre as exigências emocionais (isto é, a supressão de emoções negativas e a expressão de emoções positivas) e as estratégias (atuação profunda e superficial) do trabalho emocional, o envolvimento no trabalho e na identidade ocupacional. Finalizamos com uma discussão destes resultados e propomos orientações para investigações futuras, dada a riqueza do tema.Firefighting is one of the most important professions for our society, therefor this research aims to study the relationships between the dimensions of emotional labor (demands and strategies), work engagement, and occupational identity in Portuguese firefighters in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores. By understanding the relationship between these variables, we intend to explore the various impacts of emotional labor on work engagement and occupational identity to find ways to prevent such negative impacts and also promote well-being in our study sample. We identified a gap in the studies on this subject in Portugal, particularly in the context of firefighters. Thus, 100 Maderian and Azorian firefighters were asked to answer questionnaires: The Emotion Work Requirements Scale (EWRS) (Best et al., 1997), the Emotional Labour Scale (ELS) (Brotheridge & Lee, 2003), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) (Schaufeli et al., 2002; Shaufeli & Bakker, 2004), and the Three-Factor Scale of Social Identity (TSSI) (Nascimento & de Sousa, 2017). The data obtained was analyzed using multiple linear regression. Overalls, the results revealed relationships between the emotional demands (i.e., suppression of negative emotions and expression of positive emotions) and strategies (i.e., deep and surface acting) of emotional labor and work engagement as well as occupational identity.
