Empirical evidence demonstrates that people who develop major mental disorders are more likely of committing any criminal offense than persons without these disorders, and that schizophrenics are more likely to commit homicide than other psychotics and the general population. Also, there is now robust evidence demonstrating the association between schizophrenia, the risk of committing a violent offending, specially homicide, and the presence of co-occurring substance abuse disorder. Yet, mentally disordered offenders are less likely to recidivate than nondisordered offenders, although the predictors of recidivism are almost identical in both groups. Criminal reoffending risk assessment is relevant, especially because this rise the question of the eventual unjustified confinement of mentally disordered offenders.
