Non communicable diseases in Portugal: Challenges and opportunities

Resumo: The prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represents a challenge for health systems. Its success presupposes the involvement of not only the health sector, but also other private and public stakeholders, to allow the implementation of transversal actions in a concerted manner and to drastically reduce the annual global mortality of 36 million deaths. This inter-ministerial, cross-sectoral and comprehensive approach in the defence of civil society's rights should address the real loss of value for the national economies due to premature mortality and disability caused by cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer or diabetes. This article seeks, through the analysis of Big Data, to contextualize the reality of NCDs in Portugal and Europe, presenting in the end some practical measures that are already being implemented or strategically designed.

O seu sucesso pressupõe o envolvimento, para além do setor da saúde, de outros grupos de interesse privados e públicos para que, de forma concertada, se implementem medidas de atuação transversais e se diminua, drasticamente, a mortalidade global anual de 36 milhões de pessoas. Esta abordagem interministerial, intersectorial e inclusiva, para a defesa de direitos de toda a sociedade civil, deverá encarar as perdas reais nas economias nacionais por mortalidade prematura ou incapacidade para o trabalho resultante de doenças cardíacas, doença pulmonar obstrutiva crónica (DPOC), cancro ou diabetes.
