A pesar del surgimiento de un nuevo gusto teatral y de la institución de una censura que pugnaba por la defensa de la identidad portuguesa, siguió registrándose la influencia del teatro del siglo de oro sea a través de su defensa escrita por el Marques de Valença (1739-1748), sea por el éxito de éste teatro y de las compañías españolas que representaron en Lisboa. Contrariando una lectura unívoca y simplista de la historia de la decadencia del teatro español en Portugal y aportando nuevos elementos para matizar este fenómeno, se procede a una relectura de la querella del teatro español y francés en Portugal, seguida de un análisis de sus reflejos en la censura y en los tablados portugueses del siglo XVIII. After 150 years of Spanish dominium in the Portuguese theatrical system, in the beginnings of the 18th century the Spanish cultural products face unforeseen obstacles in Portugal. Notwithstanding the appearance of new French and Italian theatre aesthetics and the creation of a united instance of censorship aiming at rescuing Portuguese national identity, Spanish Golden Age theatre was still cherished both by Portuguese audiences and by the intellectual aristocracy championed by Marquês de Valença on his Apologetic Discourse (1739) and subsequent texts (1748).
