Resumo: The painted wooden ceiling of the church of Ulgueira, dating from the 18th century, whose authorship is unknown, has as iconography the Nossa Senhora da Conceição and its attributes, painting of the baroque period of illusion, of beauty and quality. This research and intervention were justified by the advanced state of degradation and near abandonment to which this property and integrated decorative arts were subject. The study and intervention of conservation and restoration aimed to reverse the chromatic alteration of the work, the need to fix the loose boards to the ceiling structure and the immunization and disinfestation of the wood is essential for the future preservation of the work. Excessive darkening of the paint was due to dirt and especially the ageing of the finishing layer, the very oxidized varnish and the alteration of the products used in previous interventions. Alteration of the finishing layer was the most obvious pathology that was intended to be resolved, improving the formal reading of the composition and its enjoyment as a religious message. Laboratory techniques were used to identify the varnish and the additions in the finishing layer, to characterize the binder and the metallic sheets and to make a precise diagnosis of the state of conservation, as well as, to establish a grounded intervention methodology. It was also intended to raise awareness of the village population to its heritage through the accompaniment of the work, for this endowing it with all the conditions of hygiene and safety, not only to carry out the work but to be visited. It was also the objective to propose means of maintaining the intervention, preventive conservation, for the adaptation of the surroundings and still suggesting activities that allow the church to reopen the population periodically, visits and cultural activities, the use of space is fundamental for its conservation.
