This project is due to the inexistence of a medium or long term national level study about the spatiotemporal dynamics of the Portuguese forest. This thesis in particular studies the dynamics of land use, between 1970 and 2006, for the municipality of Carregal do Sal, in order to determine the influence of fire on those dynamics. For that purpose, it was used the information of the national forests inventories for the years 1970 and 2006, the land use map of 1990 (COS 90) and the information of the burned areas between 1975 and 2007, to create several transition matrices that were used to characterize and analyze the temporal patterns dynamics of land use. The thesis here presented becomes important since it allows the understanding of the landscape composition evolution under fire and without fire.
