Introduction: Aging can involve progressive alterations that do not compromise the individual?s daily routine. However, these alterations are sometimes more extensive, affecting the elderly person?s autonomy. Among the alterations, the most important ones are associated to cognition and emotion. Concerning this type of populations, studies indicate that the most effective way of intervention is through the application of structured neuropsychological rehabilitation programs. Aims: The main aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of the Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Program in cognition and emotional functioning, in an institutional context. The specific aims are: 1) Study the differences between the cognitive and emotional variables: before and after the intervention; 2) Study the differences between the cognitive and emotional variables, between the Intervention Group, IG and the Neutral Group, NG, through pre- and post-interventions; 3) Inquire the association between the cognitive and emotional variables and the sociodemographic variables of the participants. Methods: The sample is composed by 19 old people, with an average age of 82, 95 years (DP=7, 27). Concerning the full samples, 10 of them were submitted to a Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Program (IG), and the other 9 participated in unstructured dynamic groups (NG). The sample was evaluated before and after the administration of the Program, through the following questionnaires and scales: Sociodemographic Questionnaire; Montreal Cognitive Assessment; Geriatric Depression Scale; Geriatric Anxiety Inventory; Frontal Battery Assessment; Loneliness Scale; and Instrument of Assessment of Quality of Life. Results: The results showed significant improvements of the IG at a cognitive and an emotional level (reduction of the depressive symptomatology, of loneliness feeling and a positive individual evaluation of quality of life), when compared to the NG. The NG didn?t show significant improvements regarding anxiety and quality of life (domain of the senses). Furthermore, the results also showed significant associations in the pre-intervention between the number of schooling years and cognition performance; between the age and the quality of life; in post-intervention, between the age and the depressive symptomatology and also between the age and the quality of life. Discussion and Conclusion: The results confirm the importance of the application of Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Programs as a way of preventing and delaying aging symptoms and dementia, therefore the importance of intervention at a cognitive, an emotional and a behavioral level. The implementation of these programs can also reduce the loneliness feeling among elderly people. |
