Resumo: This article is based on an inquiry carried through for a dissertation in the scope of a Masters Degree in Sciences of Education, specializing in Administration and Pertaining to school Organization; it was concluded in 2007 at the Portuguese Catholic University. The main objective of the inquiry was to understand the way pupils view and value their school leaders and the various process of leadership. For the accomplishment of this study, lower secondary school was intentionally chosen on the basis of criteria, as its insertion in a challenging social-economic context pertaining to school leaders; the existence of success pointers, for example, the pupils school marks and the public image of the school; the permanence in the exercise of position, especially on the part of the board's Executive chairman. The theoretical boarding develops around leadership and organizational concepts, being outstanding the perspectives focused on people, the participation and, particularly, the promotion of well-being and pupils learning's. ln the empirical source, the data had been collected next to three groups of pupils, different years and different groups of the 12- 15 years old of basic education, which they had expressed in different ways, their perspectives on school leadership. The analysis based on the pupils perspectives allowed to identify relationships between organizational processes, their interactions with the school's staff, the different styles ofleadership and specifically the emotional side of leadership and its influence in the school's life.

O objectivo principal da investigação foi compreender o modo como os alunos percepcionam e valorizam os líderes e os processos de liderança. Para a realização do estudo foi escolhida, intencionalmente, uma escola dos 2° e 3º ciclos do ensino básico, com base em critérios, como a sua inserção num contexto socioeconómico desafiante para os líderes escolares; a existência de indicadores de sucesso, por exemplo, os resultados dos alunos e a imagem pública da escola; e a permanência no exercício do cargo, especialmente por parte do presidente do Conselho Executivo. A abordagem teórica desenvolve-se em torno dos conceitos de organização e de liderança, salientando-se as perspectivas focalizadas nas pessoas, na participação e, particularmente, na promoção do bem-estar e das aprendizagens dos alunos. Na vertente empírica, os dados foram recolhidos junto de três grupos de alunos pertencentes a diferentes anos e turmas do 3º ciclo do ensino básico, os quais expressaram, de diferentes formas, as suas perspectivas sobre a liderança da escola.
