Resumo: The present research investigates the feasibility of implementing actions of a temporary profile in the spaces where old ruined buildings are located on the banks of the Douro River. The ruins are part of a set of buildings occupied for manufacturing activities in the 19th and 20th centuries, configuring the story of a significant past for the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. In the development of the work, three dimensions are explored as to the material and immaterial condition of these spaces. First, the philosophical and immaterial character; then the condition of them as elements of study for the disciplines of urbanism and restoration; finally, their conversion into spaces intended for public use. In areas where the ruins are located, several themes of discussion converge, both due to the historical condition of these sites, as well as the proximity of the ruins to river and an area considered world heritage of humanity. This factors imply that any intervention considers factors that benefit the local society and the preservation of these buildings. Temporary use practices have proven to be a possible strategy for responding to all these considerations. Its ephemeral character, which is easy to implement, initially constitutes an effective method for the dynamization of these spaces, integrating the local society without compromising the possible patrimonial condition of the Douro Ruins.
