Uma Lagoa Perdida no Tempo. A Água e a Ruína no Porto de Salir

The present dissertation collects elements for the recognition and valorisation of a forgotten territory, calling for the urgent need to conserve the last structure that bears witness to the memory of the place - the old customs house of Salir do Porto. Now in ruins, the building represented the arrival and control point of an important maritime port, located on the shores of the now extinct Alfeizerão lagoon. The aim is to evoke the history of that region, referring to its maritime importance as an ancient seaport. The causes that led to its extinction were studied, as well as the design attitudes that, over the centuries, were taken into account to treat the territory. Additionally, the aim was to recognize the customs building as a circumstance of a forgotten past and to raise formal and spatial hypotheses for the intervention in the ruined building. In order to bring forward the ruin into the contemporary universe, while trying to preserve its past, the present dissertation was composed with a new programmatic suggestion, accompanied by the respective intervention proposal.
