The present work is the result of a research on social housing, based on an interest inPortuguese Seventies' context, and lately focused on the italian post-war social housingexperience: the INA-Casa plan.The several references on fiftes' italian housing found in Nuno Portas' and José AntonioBandeirinha's books, were crucial to chose the final argument.Studying the INA-Casa plan involved two steps.First, it has been necessary to make a step backward in order to describe the Europeancontext, with all its evolving cities, its new housings, its Modern Movement'sexperiments, which led to a modern conception of house.It has also been necessary to take a step forward, considering an interesting case-studyof non purely INA-Casa project sample: Adalberto Libera's via Pessina Garden City, inCagliari.This project, with its particular and not common features, represents the real setting-upof this thesis' second chapter's theories. It has also been possible to produce some finalstatements about social housing and its importance nowadays.A redevelopment present project has been proposed in order to safeguard via Pessina'sarchitecture, together with a collective program which involves Cagliari majority, theauthorities for the architectural supervision and the inhabitants of the district.This work wants to give a hint to preserve the Fifties'social housing projects, and toproduce real and smart conservation proposals, giving these architecture landmarksback to its cities.
