Resumo: ln this paper, I analyse and exemplify the strategies used to dignify the body in Walt Whitman and in Eugénio de Andrade, in a comparative perspective. Both poets: a) Denounce the sexual prejudice in their times; b) Defend the right to several sexual options; c) Exalt the human being in its entirety, fighting the dichotomy that creates an opposition between body and soul; d) Reject the concept of original sin and reconstruct, in their poetry, a human paradise. ln order to do so, I resort not only to the work of these authors but also to their metapoetic reflections, and to the essays of several well-known critics.

Ambos os poetas: a) Denunciam os preconceitos sexuais nas respectivas épocas; b) Defendem o direito às diferentes opções sexuais; c) Exaltam o ser humano na sua unidade, contestando a dicotomia que opõe o corpo ao espírito; d) Rejeitam o conceito de pecado original e reconstroem, na sua poesia, uma espécie de paraíso na terra.
