This article focuses on aspects of the perception of nature (including the countryside, the garden and the farm) in English eighteenth-century literary culture. (...) which according to the author points to a new form of realism. With this aim, he distinguishes the georgic tradition from the pastoral, and he sketches a history which comprises poems by Pope, Thomson, Akenside, Goldsmith, Crabbe, Cowper and Wordsworth. In the second section, the article covers essays by Addison published in The Spectator which deal with the pleasures of the imagination (primary and secondary, or non-mimetic and mimetic, pleasures) and the enjoyment of the space of nature. (...) of the garden and its pleasures, concluding that real gardens also amount to textual places, as they are cultural constructs dependent on the sphere of taste and of the arts.
