Resumo: Patagonia has been seen by many travellers as a mythical place because of its geographical, historical, social and cultural characteristics. Every look at the Other is conditioned by the cultural contexts of every one. Similar spaces are not seen the same way by different travellers, specially if they come from different cultural spaces. The choice of Patagonia enables to compare the different views over a limited number of geographical spaces and the way travellers relate to the space and its mythical interpretation. These observations will in turn be translated into language by the narrators and what they want to tell us readers. I will start with Chatwin, go over to some Portuguese travellers as Raquel Ochoa, Gonçalo Gil Mata and Maria João Ruela, the Swede Mats Tormod and the German Carmen Rohrbach.
