Resumo: In an increasingly fast changing and challenging business environment, working with a sense of meaningful purpose that transcends the mere goal of making money, can motivate employees and be more effective for teams and organizations. This case centers on the story of Earl Bakken, the unconventional and brilliant co-founder of Medtronic, who 60 years ago, defined a mission that would become its guiding philosophy and would drive the company to become a leading medical technology services and solutions organization. The case describes the circumstances that led to the creation of the mission, the mechanisms that fostered its integration in the company’s culture, and the benefits and challenges of leading with a sense of purpose. As in most managerial situations, this case doesn’t have one correct solution. Hence, students are encouraged to engage in reflections about the relevance and paradoxes raised in the case.
