Resumo: El laberinto del Fauno by Guillermo del Toro exposes, through a fairytale, the cruelty and violence lived in Francoist Spain, after the Civil War (1936-9). Composed from a wordless lullaby, by Javier Navarrete, this song becomes the core leitmotif of all composition, getting a dual functionality: the life index and the death index. Therefore, a melody that embodies the audience in a phantasy world (life index), but quickly metamorphoses itself into a lament song (death index), realizing the horrors of reality. What are the signs that lead us to corroborate these statements? Through the analysis of scenes in which the lullaby appears diegetically and having as theoretical reference the Peircean semiotics, this study aims to uncover the several signified inherent to the lullaby, marking, analyzing and understanding them, as the life and death leiftmotif, in an interdisciplinary relationship with the image.

Composta a partir de uma canção de embalar sem palavras, por Javier Navarrete, esta torna-se o leitmotif central de toda a composição, adquirindo uma dupla funcionalidade: de índice da vida e de índice da morte. Portanto, uma melodia que nos envolve no mundo da fantasia (índice da vida), mas que rapidamente se metamorfoseia numa canção de lamento (índice da morte), dando-nos conta dos horrores da realidade. Quais os signos que nos levam à corroboração destas afirmações?
