Resumo: This essay relates mainly to the debate of the forgotten suburban, where, despite the path made troughout the different manifestations and interpretations of suburbia all around the world, the Portuguese suburban characteristics received a special attention. The marginalization of the subject, together with the kind of suburban occupation and the way they've been developing for the last two decades, leaves behind, a poor metropolitan landscape characterized by great spacial inequalities. The excessive attention recently given to the historic areas of the city and all the "hysteria" that surrounds the built patrimony, pushes the suburban discussion further away from the academic attentions and intensifies the blasé attitude that seems settled in the Portuguese academic and professional community. The denial surrounding the territorial inequalities and the suburban culture create misunderstandings that make it difficult the understand the suburban potential. Therefore, this thesis intends to recall, mainly, the state of the Portuguese suburbs, while trying to seduce professionals through the potentials found in the "outskirts" of the "established" city. It promotes the capacity to see the "periphery" as space for analysis and experimentation. It argues that the "urban freedom", can be found, now-a-days, in the suburban city, as in opposition to the circumstances that the older centralities offer.
