Exploration of the professional identities of three Mathematics teacher educators through narratives

Resumo: A study of the identities, understood as collections of stories, of three trainers who acted in 2021 as teachers of teaching practice of mathematics teachers studying a postgraduate program is presented. A theoretical perspective is adopted that understands identity as a discursive activity, that is, collections of a particular type of stories, which are reifying, endorsable and significant. Teachers wrote stories about the trainers they did their teaching practice with as part of a course in the postgraduate program. These stories were presented to three of the trainers who indicated which one they most identified with. Then, stories told by them by email and interview were collected. The analysis of the trainers' responses made it possible to detect aspects of their real and designated identities. In particular, some episodes of stories written about them with whom they did not identify catalyzed, in turn, their own narratives that makeup part of their designated identity. It was also shown that professional identities are linked to the subject taught. Additionally, it was observed that the stories used constitute an appropriate methodological tool to study the identity of the trainer and to promote reflective processes on professional practice. Specifically, it was evidenced that stories in the third person can account for the identity of the subjects, as well as stories in the first person.

Se adopta una perspectiva teórica que entiende a la identidad como una actividad discursiva, esto es, colecciones de un tipo particular de historias, que son respaldables, cosificadas y significativas. Los profesores escribieron historias sobre los formadores con los que cursaban su práctica docente. Estas se presentaron a tres de las formadoras que indicaron con cuál de ellas se identificaban más. A partir de ello, se recogieron historias relatadas por ellas mediante correo electrónico y entrevista. El análisis de las respuestas de las formadoras permitió detectar aspectos de sus identidades reales y designadas. En particular, algunos episodios de historias escritas sobre ellas con los que no se identificaron catalizaron narrativas propias que conforman parte de su identidad designada. También se evidenció que las identidades profesionales están vinculadas con la asignatura enseñada. Adicionalmente, se observó que las historias utilizadas constituyen una herramienta metodológica apropiada para estudiar la identidad del formador y para promover procesos reflexivos sobre la práctica profesional. Se evidenció que las historias en tercera persona pueden dar cuenta de la identidad de los sujetos, tanto como las historias en primera persona.Ce travail est une étude sur les identités de trois formatrices qui étaient, en 2021, professeurs  de pratique de l’enseignement de professeurs de Mathématiques, en un diplome de perfectionnement. La perspective théorique choisie entend l’identité comme une activité discursive, c’est-a-dire des collections d’histoires soutenables, réifiées et significatives. Il a été demandé aux enseignants d’écrire des histoires sur leurs formateurs de pratique de l’enseignement. Ces histoires ont été présentées a trois des formatrices qui ont indiqué avec laquelle elles s’identifiaient le mieux. Sur cette base, d’autres histoires ont été racontées par les formatrices par mail ou lors d’une entrevue. L’analyse de leurs réponses a permis de détecter des aspects de leurs identités réelles et désignées. En particulier, certains épisodes des histoires écrites sur elles et avec lesquelles elles ne se sont pas identifiées, ont catalysé des narrations propres qui font partie de leur identité désignée. Il en résulte aussi que les identités professionnelles sont liées a la discipline enseignée. Par ailleurs, il a été possible d’observer que les histoires utilisées constituent un outil méthodologique approprié pour étudier l’identité du formateur et promouvoir des processus de réflexion sur la pratique professionnelle. Il a été également mis en évidence que les histoires a la troisieme personne peuvent, tout autant que les histoires a la premiere personne, jeter une lumiere sur l’identité des sujets.Apresenta-se um estudo sobre as identidades de três formadores que, em 2021, actuaram como docentes na prática pedagógica de professores de matemática em fase de pós-graduação. Adopta-se uma perspectiva teórica que entende a identidade como uma actividade discursiva, ou seja, colecções de um tipo particular de histórias, que são endossáveis, reificadas e significativas. Os professores escreveram histórias sobre os formadores com quem estiveram envolvidos na sua prática pedagógica. Estas foram apresentadas a três dos formadores que indicaram com qual delas se identificavam mais. A partir daí, foram recolhidas histórias através de correio electrónico e de entrevistas. A análise das respostas dos formadores permitiu-nos detectar aspectos das suas identidades reais e designadas. Nomeadamente, alguns episódios de histórias escritas sobre eles, com as quais não se identificavam, catalisaram narrativas próprias que fazem parte da sua identidade designada. Foi também evidente que as identidades profissionais estão ligadas à disciplina leccionada. Além disso, verificou-se que as histórias utilizadas constituem um instrumento metodológico adequado para estudar a identidade do formador e para promover processos de reflexão sobre a prática profissional.
