Resumo: In this dissertation we study the use of wood-based panels as a support for contemporary art painting, being our research theme delimited to hardboard panels. The characteristics and properties of these materials, the advantages and disadvantages of their use are analyzed. The phenomena of alteration to which they are subjected and their behavior towards these alterations was also observed. To this goal, questionnaires were sent to national and international museums and galleries. For a more in-depth analysis of the hardboard panels, their production process was studied, and a visit was made to the factory where this material is produced in Portugal, in Tomar. To evaluate the mechanical, physical and chemical behavior of hardboard, commercially known as Platex®, laboratory tests were performed at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC). The phenomena of alteration were evaluated between March 23, 2017 and January 24, 2018, considering exposure to high temperature and relative humidity conditions; unwarping techniques and protection products were tested. It was concluded that hardboard is a material which when exposed to high temperature and relative humidity conditions, suffer changes, and the main phenomenon identified results from the presence of moulds. It should be also noted that the application of protection products creates a film which, on the one hand, protects the pieces, in particular concerning warping, on the other hand affects the porosity and adhesion of the surface, which may influence the use of these materials, in particular for artistic purposes. It is important to emphasize that the time factor (duration of tests) and the conditions under which the pieces will be subjected are of fundamental importance in their evolution. The growing thorough study of wood derivatives, as a support for contemporary works of art, will allow the conservator restorer to make more sustained decisions and thus contribute to their preservation
