Resumo: This theoric and practical work is based on an analysis of the characters that live in popular tales and, consequently, on the potential for their recreation. The analysis is made essentially to european and asian tales, with particular regard to the Portuguese case. This analysis searchs for the characters thar appear constantly in the tales, and also for the one that appears only in some cultures or folktales. The study helps to understand how traditional tales create characters psychologically, conceptually and graphically, and their analysis is done both in the texts and in the illustrations that for years were made for the tradicional tales. After this study, two characters are united in order to create a totally new character that, despite coming from the traditional stories, does not appear in these. This search needs imagination and lives of the inpiration that traditional tales carrie. It is sought, almost a new conceptual language, where are embark characters from different folklore. The practical work consists on drawing these characters with a final illustration response. The illustration is based in the golden rule, in experimentation and expression and always keeps the focus of being an illustration for children. The golden rule is used to geometrize and balance the parts of the illustration. Experimentation passes from sketches, trought color, and arrives to a more expressive and direct illustrated response. The demand is to achieve simplicity, so that color and forms give the characters themselves a less analytical approach. The end result is five illustrations of new characters, imagined through the world of fairy tales. The characters are the King-Genie, the Frog-Queen, the Witch-Princess, the Fairy-Dwarf and the Dragon-Prince. Besides having a research in the area of popular literature and children's illustration and responding graphically to a new approach, it also intends to create a possibility of new forms and ideas to appear associated with the created characters, remembering the permanence of fairy tales still in the culture as a source of inspiration
