This dissertation aims to analyze the relation established between the design and the use of intermediate spaces in the context of multi-family housing. From a set of representative examples of the post-war architecture in Europe (built between 1945 and 1970), the research will try to identify the potentials of intermediate spaces in the public and private contexts. Intermediate spaces establish both the relation between the street and a housing building's entrance (public domain), between the housing building's entrance and an apartment's entrance (private domain of collective use) and between the several spaces that compose the apartment (private domain). After a context of interme¬diate spaces in multi-family housing buildings, the work goes through a pondered and thoughtful analysis of each of the mentioned scales. The research is based in crossing theory and practice, bringing together the bibliographical references and three examples of multi-family housing buildings intentionally selected. Further¬more, this work provides a comparative analysis focused on the design and usage of different intermediate spaces. The present dissertation allows to reclaim an attentive view that overcomes the programmatic nature of intermediate spaces, to contradict their ambiguity, someti¬mes associated. Assuming that one the best ways to preserve a space is through its usage, this study allows to identify the general principles of design that condition this usage and that allow to create intermediate spaces conducive to an intimate sociability.
