This thesis is structured around the conception of an urban project development - from the formulation of a strategy of intervention to the definition of an array of actions for which specific proposals and possible urban design solutions have been conceived - such derive from an understanding that a place is not only determined by the mere formal contours of its landscape, but also by a whole order of relations that support urban dynamics that occur therein and that determine its vitality or failure. In this context, in order to understand a given territory and to formulate an intervention strategy, we begin by underlining the space-time relationship, seeing as it determines and conveys meaning within the project. Le chemin de la pierre. A construção de um itinerário begins with a new system of relations and public space that connects Past and Present of the stone production system of the Pays Blanc, in the city of Tournai, exploring the potential meaning and value of this industry in its construction and current development. Such potential and value go far beyond the strictly economic dimension, determining the character and identity of a whole territory that it affects. This heavily industrialized territory encloses a History and presents a characteristic landscape violently constructed by the continuous exploration of an economic activity throughout an extended period of time and which has inflicted profound marks hidden today behind heaps and dense vegetation. Through the action of time, these marks have gained a symbolic and poetic dimension that this work has sought to unveil and explore.
