Resumo: | This dissertation has as main objective to try to understand two issues. First, what are the differences between the arts and architecture. We researched if the architecture is actually an art, just like any other. If it "works" under the same rules. We seek to understand how any ambiguity in the definition of architecture within the arts, are influencing contemporary architecture. How this influence the "making of" architecture today. We try to understand the different paths chosen by the architects of our time, and if these different views come from the first question asked. The dissertation is divided into several chapters, in which each one tries to solve a part of the problem. First, there was a compilation and understanding of much of what was written in search of definition of art in the last 200 years. We explore different authors and theories from which we collect elements to understand what may be the art. In the second chapter, with similar methodology, we focuses on understanding the architecture over the centuries, highlighting the theoretical writings from Vitruvius to Fernando Távora. This chapter aims to understand how the role of architecture and the architect has evolved. Later, in two different chapters, we explore two architectural currents of the twentieth century, the De Stijl movement and the Functionalism of Le Corbusier, to realize if the history gives us the answers to the problem of architecture as an art. In the three last chapters: first, faced the arts with the architecture, exploring all the similarities and singularities of each one of them, and if the new directions that they take today are mitigating what distinguishes them; then, the role of the architect in society today; what have been the ways adopted for the realization of the architecture; what are the different positions, and to what extent they are beneficial or not; finally, we study different portuguese cases that exemplify the ways of being before the architecture. In conclusion, it is a synthesis of all that have been studied, is not intended just to get an understanding of this, but, somehow, to try to understand how architects could act in the future depending on the role of architecture in society: as a technique or as an art? |
