Resumo: The time between 1912 and 2012 comprises periods that are difficult to classify and/or explain in a simple and linear fashion. This conviction leads to an exploration of the importance of rupture but, at the same time, of the undeniable permanence of silent and forgotten codes which continue to operate as manipulations of opinion, reception and discourse. The irreverence of the texts dating from the beginning of the 20th century does not disappear with the end of the avant-garde movements, despite the rise of conservative trends and the seemingly insensitive shift towards ideologies that privilege a clear political commitment. The rise of post-modernism in the last few decades of the 20th century, with all its complexity and ambiguity, implies a redefinition of the concepts of rupture, representation and discourse rewriting, which had hitherto been regarded as stable. These reflections will be explored by resorting to concrete examples of the explicit theoretical break with previous poetics and by testing the validity of this break in the writing of the beginning of the 21st century. The ways of rethinking about and reconfiguring the past will lead to a discussion of the tension between the indisputably seductive challenge of novelty and the deceptive comfort of permanence. This tension clearly emerges in the subject's desire to stabilize an increasingly elusive identity.
