Mathematical modeling of game economics

Resumo: The gaming industry is in a trajectory of growth, having already established a market with capitalization in the order of billion of dollars [7]. One notable development within this industry was the emergence of "play-to-earn" games. Besides the entertainment, an attractiveness factor in this type of game is the possibility of profit. Such games, leveraged on blockchain technology, allow players to earn and own digital assets, that can be sold outside of the game at their own discretion. Thereby, "play-to-earn" games create a virtual economy. Although, these economies may differ in complexity from real ones, economic agents behave similarly [10]. Consequently, there has been an extensive discussion on this topic, as the modeling of those game economies can provide insights on the their dynamics, supporting processes, such as decision-making processes in real economies, and prediction of price or players function. However, they can be quite difficult to balance and so it is essential to apply mathematical frameworks and techniques. In this work, a dynamical system that reflects the dynamics present in a game economy is proposed. In order to do so, it was taken into consideration the Axie Infinity’s economy. Through the analysis performed on the model and the simulations carried out, it was possible to infer the robustness of the developed model, outlining future research directions that can enhance this area of study.

Um desenvolvimento notável dentro desta indústria foi o surgimento dos jogos "play-to-earn". Para além do entretenimento, um factor de atração, neste tipo de jogo, é a possibilidade de lucro. Estes jogos, baseados na tecnologia blockchain, permitem aos jogadores ganhar e possuir ativos digitais, que podem ser vendidos fora do jogo de acordo com a sua vontade. Deste modo, os jogos "play-toearn" criam uma economia virtual. Embora estas possam ser diferentes das economias reais em termos de complexidade, os agentes económicos comportam-se de forma semelhante [10]. Consequentemente, tem havido uma extensa discussão sobre este tópico, uma vez que a modelação de economias de jogo pode fornecer informações sobre as suas dinâmicas, apoiando processos, tais como processos de tomada de decisão em economias reais, e previsão de preços ou o comportamento dos jogadores. No entanto, podem ser bastante difíceis de equilibrar, pelo que é essencial a aplicação de estruturas e técnicas matemáticas. Neste trabalho, é proposto um sistema dinâmico que pretende refletir as dinâmicas presentes numa economia de jogo. Para isso, foi tida em consideração a economia do jogo Axie Infinity.
