Decreasing subjectivity in the assessment of visualizations using the Wheel of Visualization: A case study in the education sectorData visualizationEvaluation frameworkcognitive factorsperceptionUncertainty visualizationinfographicswheel of visualizationeducationDomínio/Área Científica::Ciências Naturais::Ciências da Computação e da InformaçãoDissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Business AnalyticsThe evaluation of visuals becomes a crucial task as data visualization develops popularity across a variety of fields. However, this assessment process often faces the challenge of subjectivity, as the interpretation and evaluation of visualizations can vary among individuals. To address this problem and find possible alternatives, Alberto Cairo's "Wheel of Visualization" method will be used in this master's thesis, with a specific focus on the educational field. The main goal of this research is to examine how the Wheel of Visualization, a systematic framework incorporating several components of visualization design, might be used to reduce subjectivity in the assessment of visualizations. Through a comprehensive case study conducted within the education sector, this thesis examines the effectiveness of the Wheel of Visualization in promoting consistent and objective evaluation criteria. The case study involves university students enrolled in a data visualization course who are tasked with creating a poster and interactive visualization and then, via blind peer-review, evaluate their peers’ work and give feedback based on The Wheel of Visualization’s principles. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of how the Wheel of Visualization can mitigate subjectivity and enhance the assessment of visualizations. At the same time, insights are gained and discussed into the practical challenges and benefits of implementing such a structured framework in an educational context where subjectivity may be involved to a certain degree.Naranjo-Zolotov, Mijail JuanovichRUNMendes, Pedro Martins Costa2024-03-13T14:31:56Z2024-02-022024-02-02T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/164859TID:203544528enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-18T01:46:53Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/164859Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T04:02:02.849637Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
