This dissertation aims to study the processes and practices associated with the intervention in vacant, threatened or derelict industrial heritage buildings, focused on seven interventions carried out in the context of Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012. Firstly comes an approach to the industrialization of the city itself, regarding its insertion in Ave valley, territorial transformations and industrial architecture. Following, the aspects of western deindustrialization and the region in focus are fundamental in understanding the industrial heritage movement, and the need to preserve its legacy, understanding the problems inherent in its intervention. Three international examples of cultural movements in heavily industrialized cities that also went through complicated processes of deindustrialization are analysed at last. The second part introduces the European Capital of Culture as a major turning point for the urban and industrial renewal, and its outcome for the seven interventions on focus. The production story and the conversion process introduce the projects detailed analysis and its consequencies on the industrial architecture and urban relation.
