Longitudinal nutritional evaluation in a population infected with the human immunodeficiency virus

In the belief that body composition changes in HIV-infected patients begin early in the course of the disease and that such changes are silent and stage independent, 42 asymptomatic HIV carriers were evaluated regarding anthropometrics, biochemical and body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis measurements. 35 of these patients completed the two years follow-up period. Among the parameters studied, the difference between the initial and the final value was statistically significant for the CD4 count, serum albumin, phase angle and for the extracellular mass/body cell mass index. There were no such differences found for body mass index, lean body mass, and body cell mass.The 35 patients were divided in two groups, one with no AIDS defining event and the other with progression to AIDS. Between those two groups of patients, there were no statistically significant differences. It was concluded that a systematic and timely metabolic and nutritional evaluation allows body composition changes to be detected, even before they become clinically or biochemically evident.
