The present study explores how violin teachers can assist students in optimizing the memorization process. Authors who have investigated this theme have highlighted the importance of effective access to stored information through the use of specific cues (retrieval cues). In physical education, the same cues have been investigated as a means of improving communication, as well as promoting meaningful learning and memory optimization. The aim of this exploratory study was to identify teaching cues and their use in one-to-one violin lessons. This research topic emerged from my experience as a violin teacher when I began to question myself: “Why should I repeat some instructions so many times for some students? Why do they remember some instructions instead others?” These, and others questions, led me to undertake a detailedobservation of teacher and student communication behind classroom doors. The results of this study highlighted the importance and the need to systematize the use of teaching cues as a teaching tool.
