It can be divided into the CNS and the PNS. The PNS can be further divided into the SMS and the ANS. The sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the ANS are opposed to each other: the sympathetic division is responsible for fight or flight responses while the parasympathetic division is activated when the body is relaxed. Stress is defined as an organism’s response to an outside stimulus defined as a stressor. Stressors can be environmental changes or the presence of threats, either real or perceived as such. Stressful situations provoke an increase in heart rate, which is a measure of how many times the heart contracts in a time period (usually it is presented in beats per minute). Heart rate variability is another marker that can be used to determine a person’s stress levels. High HRV is associated with calm decision making while low HRV is associated with snap decisions and emergency responses. Biofeedback is either the process through which a person can learn to control unconscious activities or the process of making devices react to the user’s physiological processes. Photoplethysmography is a non-invasive technique through which changes in the circulating blood volume are detected using reflected light. PPG allows the monitorization of heart rate. This project combines PPG and biofeedback computer programming to create an augmented reality mobile horror game that reacts to the player’s HR and HRV. The final game was tested on five subjects that played the game twice and gave their opinions on the user experience. Statistical tests were also conducted to ascertain if the game provoked notable differences in HR and HRV. Results show that the game’s user experience was positive, but it failed, in most cases, in altering the player’s mean HR and HRV in a statistically significant way. Nevertheless, the game did react to momentary changes in HR and HRV, accomplishing what it set out to do initially.Cláudio, Ana Paula Boler, 1959-Ferreira, Hugo AlexandreRepositório da Universidade de LisboaOliveira, João Miguel Vicente de202220222025-10-29T00:00:00Z2022-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10451/61505enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2023-12-25T01:19:14Zoai:repositorio.ul.pt:10451/61505Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T00:56:09.337191Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
