Currently for the Portuguese population, investigation comparing attachment, selfcompassion and psychopathological symptoms between a sample of individuals who use or do not use the Internet to establish intimate relationships is unavailable. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate how individuals who use the Internet to establish intimate relationships differ psychologically from individuals who do not use the Internet for this purpose. In order to follow through, we use the following scales: Experiences in Close Relationships (ERP), Self-Compassion Scale (SELFCS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and a short questionnaire including sociodemographic data. The sample consisted of 350 individuals of whom 284 individuals used social networks to establish intimate relationships (U) and 66 individuals did not use the Internet for this purpose (NU), with a mean age of 29,90 (DP=7,41) for the U group and 30,72 (DP=8,26) for the NU group. The majority of the sample was single for both groups (U: 83,5% vs. NU: 68,2%), heterosexual (U: 79,6% vs. NU: 93,9%), which was attending or attended Superior Education (U: 66,5% vs. NU: 60,6%). We determined that individuals who use the Internet to establish intimate relationships had a higher number of short-term intimate relationships when compared to the group of individuals who do not use the Internet for this purpose. We also found that individuals without a romantic relationship (single, separated/divorced and widowed) were who resorted to this type of online service. Therefore, differences between groups regarding attachment, self-compassion and psychopathology were not found. However, stronger associations are highlighted between psychopathological symptoms (global severity index and BSI dimensions) with the remaining variables in study (attachment and self-compassion) in the group that does not use the Internet to establish intimate relationships in comparison to the group who reports using the Internet with this intention. These results extol the importance of deepening research in this field, since there are no studies concerning this area in Portugal. |
