Resumo: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by irreversible changes and losses in renal structure and functions, requiring the adoption of renal replacement therapies, which includes hemodialysis (HD). The diagnosis and treatment of CKD involves changes at a personal, family and social levels, with the presence of depressive symptoms, changes in body image and impairment in quality of life (QoL) being common. Thus, the positive body image (PBI), as an appreciation and respect for the body, and for what it represents and can do, seems to protect against negative feelings in disease situations. This cross-sectional and correlational study with quantitative methodology aims to understand the impact of PBI on QoL and depression, considering, for this purpose, participants with CKD (clinical group) and participants without chronic disease (non-clinical group). The clinical group consists of 54 participants with a mean age of 57.8 years. The non-clinical group consists of 54 participants with a mean age of 51.5 years. For data collection, self-report measures were used to assess sociodemographic variables and to evaluate body appreciation (BAS-2), body functionality (FAS), self-care (BRS), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) and depression (DASS). The results revealed significant differences between groups in terms of body functionality, depression and QoL. It was also found the existence of positive and significant associations between the dimensions of PBI and the domains of QoL, and negative and significant associations between the dimensions of PBI and depression. The role of body functionality as a predictor of QoL and the role of general QoL and psychological QoL as predictors of depression are also highlighted. These results show the importance of PBI, namely, the body functionality in order to prevent and promote the QoL of these patients and, consequently, reduce depressive symptoms.
