Resumo: In this paper, we consider contemporary Madeiran poetry based on collections of new poetry or poetry journals from the 1950s to the present. That decade saw the appearance of the first signs of rupture in the lyric of Madeira, with voices such as Herberto Helder, Jorge de Freitas and António Aragão. Following the trends observable in continental Portugal, interest in creation of poetry on the Island grew in the 1970s, particularly after the Carnation Revolution. The 1970s-1990s were the golden years of poetry in Madeira, as is clear from the number of poets that emerged at that time, namely Irene Lucília Andrade, José Sainz-Trueva, Gualdino A. Rodrigues, José António Gonçalves, João Dionísio, João Carlos Abreu, Laurindo Goes, Fátima Pitta Dionísio, Maria Aurora C. Homem, Luís Viveiros, Carlos N. Fino, David Pinto Correia, Teresa Jardim, José Tolentino Mendonça, Ângela Varela, Laura Moniz and Isabel Aguiar. Despite the generalised paradigm of the show culture, the new technologies and globalisation, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira the 20th century is witnessing a multitude of poetic expression projects. The public who is interested in poetry remains scarce, but comprises more specialised readers. This is, therefore, an approach that sums up over half a century of poetry in Madeira. Keywords Madeiran Lyric; Poetry Journal; Anthology; Cultural System; Madeiran Literary Life.
