Using as a case study the intervention on the House of the Railway Heritage of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, by the architectural office Oficina de Arquitetos, the present work consists on an investigation about the concept of genius loci, that is, what determines the character of place and why it is important that the space organizing agents should preserve it. Thus, through an analysis of the origin and development of the site it was possible to identify which elements determine the essence of this place, which ones were preserved and which ones were destroyed and also if the contemporary interventions which replaced the old buildings are attentive to the place's history and the needs of the local population. Then it was possible to construct a critical appraisal about the project made by Oficina de Arquitetos regarding its relation to the context and how does it seek to serve the inhabitants of that region.
