Resumo: The fluoroquinolones are antimicrobial agents introduced in the clinical use at the beggining of the eighties. Their broad spectrum against bac­terial species, like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistent strains of Staphilococus aureus, orally absorbed and a favorable side effect profile, have rapidly made them an widely prescribed antibiotics. But in 1989-90 some infor­mation repported the devellopment of resistent bacterial strains. The authors, based on the lite­ rature and their hospital data, warn against the empirical use of quinolones and their negative implications on the infection control.

O seu largo espectro de actividade anti­ bacteriana, a possibilidade de administração por via oral para tratar as infecções devidas a Pseu­domonas aeruginosa e Staphylococcus aureus meticilina-resistentes e com um perfil de efeitos acessórios muito favorável, determinaram a sua crescente utilização clínica. Contudo, em 1989-90 surgiram os primeiros dados relativos ao desenvolvimento de estirpes resistentes.
