Alguns autores advogam que essa relação existe, implicando interações entre o Sistema Estomatognático (SE) e alterações posturais, enquanto outros refutam tal relação.O objetivo desta revisão bibliográfica consiste em avaliar a possível relação entre alterações posturais (sejam elas cervicais ou em todo o corpo) e a presença de DTM.Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados da Medline/Pubmed e Cochrane Library com as palavras chave “dental occlusion”, “body posture”, Temporomandibular disorders”, “head posture”, “TMD” e “TMJ”, utilizando o conetor boleano AND. Os critérios de inclusão aplicados foram os seguintes: tipo de publicação (meta-análises, revisões sistemáticas, ensaios clínicos randomizados (RCT) e ensaios clínicos controlados (CCT)); espécie (Humana); data da publicação (a partir de 1 de Janeiro de 2002); idioma (inglês e português); com disponibilidade dos abstract online. Após a leitura dos mesmos, incluíram-se somente artigos com relevância para o tema. Utilizaram-se ainda outros critérios de inclusão nos RCT e CCT, nomeadamente, o número de sujeitos dos estudos (n≥20) e relevância para o tema. O número total de artigos sujeitos a revisão foi de 11.Para avaliar a qualidade dos artigos foi utilizada a ferramenta da Cochrane, ‘Risk of Bias Assessmen Tool’; o nível de evidência dos artigos foi estabelecido segundo as normas do ‘Oxford-Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine’.Existem diversas limitações associadas aos ensaios clínicos, nomeadamente no que se refere aos métodos de avaliação da DTM e da postura, e também do diagnóstico dos diferentes tipos de DTM.Estas limitações dificultam a tarefa de avaliar a possível relação entre as variáveis em estudo, uma vez que frequentemente a metodologia não é a apropriada. Tendo em conta a complexidade da etiologia das DTM, os métodos de diagnóstico existentes, e a possível relação com a postura cervical/corporal, são necessários mais estudos com qualidade para transpor qualquer resultado para a prática clínica.The relationship between dental occlusion/Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and cervical and body posture is a theme which has been debated over the last two decades, raising speculation about its existence and discord between authors. Some of them claim that this association exists and so, by altering the Stomatognathic System (SS), there will be corrections in the body posture, and by altering the body posture, the SS will change as well; however, other authors refute such claim.The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate if there is a connexion between posture alterations and the presence of TMD.A search was conducted using the databases from Medline/Pubmed and Cochrane Library using the following keywords: “dental occlusion”, “body posture”, Temporomandibular disorders”, “head posture”, “TMD” and “TMJ”; using the connector AND. The inclusion criteria established took into consideration the type of publication (meta-analysis, systematic reviews, randomized controlled clinical trials (RCT) and controlled clinical trials (CCT)); the species (Human); the date of publication (articles published after 1st of January of 2000); the language (English and Portuguese) and online availability of the articles’ abstracts. Selection of the articles was then performed after reading and evaluating their relevance to the topic at hand. After reading them, the ones relevant on the theme were included. The inclusion criteria used on the RCT and the CCT was: number of subjects in the study (n≥20); and the relevance of the article to the theme. The total number of articles used on this revision was 11.To evaluate the quality of the articles, it was used the ‘Risk of Bias Assessment’ from Cochrane. The articles’ level of evidence was established according the Oxford-Centre for Evidencce-Based Medicine.There were several limitations associated with the clinical trials, such as: the methods of evaluating both the presence of TMD and the posture; as well as the different types of TMD.These limitations proved difficult to establish a possible relationship between the variables in study, as the methodology is not the most appropriate at times.
