The developing countries are concentrating major structural problems that hinder their prosperity. Finding ways to enhance sustainable development through design and planning practices is essential in the context of the ecological crisis shown. Therefore, what is proposed with the research to be developed is divided in two parts, a theoretical and practical one. The first, theoretical, strives to outline a narrative that realizes the roots of inequality and its reproduction in the territory, understands the potentials of sustainable development in the broadest meaning it can reach for the discipline of architecture and urbanism, and studies cases in which the planning of sustainable practices is systematically planned and promotes the development of communities. The second, practical, stars from the principles used in the study to analyze the Brazilian Sertão and, later, make strategic propositions for the development of this territory in view of the practices and strategies previously found. For this effect to be achieved, different scales will be addressed at work - from national infrastructures to the design of a street, through strategies for land use and soil occupation and development plans to the city of Ingá, Paraíba, where the case study becomes present. Finally, this work should serve as an example for new design and thinking strategies that try to reshape the discipline of architecture through the guiding principles of ecology and social developing.
