Resumo: Over the past decades, 3D Geological Mapping has evolved into an important tool for the planning, development and optimization of projects in urban areas. It has been extensively used by the National Geological Surveys of Great Britain and Finland, who have pioneered this theme and created a 3D database of their geology to improve urban and territorial planning. Looking at the Portuguese panorama, the application of 3D modelling as a tool for supporting land use in urban area is something to be explored and very few case studies have yet been published. It is the aim of this master’s thesis to demonstrate the usefulness of 3D geological modelling and to establish the methodology for its application. Over 50 boreholes, done in the sixties with the purpose of expanding Lisnave´s drydocks, were used to develop a model for the engineering geological setting, up to a depth of 35 m from the surface, at the Cacilhas-Margueira riverine area, in Almada. The model itself can be used for additional urban development or to supply the engineering geological background model of the area. The model can also be expanded in case that further development of the area requires more knowledge of the surroundings. To analyze the borehole information, it was necessary to define the depositional sequence of strata, mainly based on the stratigraphic sequence defined by Pais et al. (2012). For the development of the conceptual model, a specialized software, Leapfrog™, was used. Although there was a good correlation between the model and a set of boreholes used with the purpose of validating it, some difficulties had to be overcome during the modelling and worked on in more detail. In addition, the lithological sequence for the area is proposed.
