The present study aims to understand the way children and their parents perceive the relations within the family and their strengths. This is a descriptive and correlational study. To collect the data, we used the Family Forces Questionnaire (Melo & Alarc?o, 2011) to evaluate the perception of the family forces by the parents and the Family Relations Test ? Children?s Version (Bene & Anthony, 1985) to evaluate the perception of the family relations by the children. Our sample consists of 15 families of children with Special Needs, with 30 subjects (15 children and 15 parents). The great majority of the parents are females (93,3%), with ages between 30 and 61 years old, being 45,5 the average age. In relation to the gender of the children, 53,3% are females and 46,7% are males, with ages between 8 and 16 years old, being 11,6 the average age. The Special Needs shown by the children are Mild Intellectual Disability (33,3%), Moderate Intellectual Disability (26,7%), Hyperactivity Disorder with Attention Deficit (20%) and Disorders of the Autism Spectrum (20%). The results indicate that the parents perceive high family strengths, independently of how the children view the family relations. The results show that the children attribute more positive feelings to the relationship with their mother, and the negative feeling are mainly attributed to the relations with the father, the sibling(s) or the member(s) of the extended family. Studies about family relations and family strengths of families with children with Special Needs are limited, which makes more investigation in this area necessary to a better comprehension about them, towards the reinforcement of strategies for psychological intervention that favor their well-being. |
