Numerous studies have been conducted on the factors that affect the value of each salary, however, due to the previous lack of data, researchers have used the players' market value as a proxy variable, substituting the actual salaries. This Master's dissertation aimed to study whether there are differences in the conclusions of studies on performance and remuneration in football when using market values as a proxy variable for real salaries. This is something that had never been studied for a significant amount of data and for this, we used salaries, market values, performance indicators and personal characteristics of players from the five main European football leagues. Data were collected using web scraping techniques and were later treated and preliminarily analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques. Two-way fixed effect models for panel data were implemented, one for market values and one for salaries, estimated by three different estimators and, finally, a critical comparison was made between the models. It was found that when market values were used as a proxy for salaries, differences were noted in the regression models, both in the impact on remuneration of the control variables and in the impact on remuneration of the variables measuring performance, regardless of the estimator used to calculate the model. The findings of this study suggest that researchers should only use real salaries if the aim is to study the relationship between performance and remuneration of football players.Até recentemente, era difícil obter os dados dos salariais reais dos jogadores de futebol, no entanto, com a expansão da economia do desporto, começaram a surgir empresas que os trabalham e comercializam, pelo que os dados salariais de jogadores de diferentes ligas de futebol tornaram-se acessíveis a qualquer pessoa. Foram realizados numerosos estudos sobre os fatores que afetam o valor de cada salário, no entanto, devido à anterior falta de dados, os investigadores utilizaram o valor de mercado dos jogadores como uma variável de substituição para os salários. Esta dissertação de mestrado visou estudar se existiam diferenças nas conclusões dos estudos sobre o desempenho e remuneração no futebol quando se utilizam os valores de mercado como variável de substituição dos salários reais. Esta questão nunca tinha sido estudada para uma quantidade significativa de dados e para isso, utilizámos salários, valores de mercado, indicadores de desempenho e características pessoais de jogadores das cinco principais ligas europeias de futebol. Os dados foram recolhidos utilizando técnicas de web scraping e foram posteriormente tratados e analisados preliminarmente utilizando técnicas de estatística descritiva. Foram implementados modelos de efeito fixo bidirecionais para dados de painel, um para valores de mercado e outro para salários, estimados por três estimadores diferentes e, finalmente, foi feita uma comparação crítica entre os modelos. Verificou-se que quando os valores de mercado foram utilizados como proxy para os salários, foram observadas diferenças nos modelos de regressão, tanto no impacto sobre a remuneração das variáveis de controlo como no impacto sobre a remuneração das variáveis que medem a performance, independentemente do estimador utilizado para calcular o modelo.
