Resumo: ‘Housing’ is still a largely unaddressed topic in the analysis of film. Although Düllo states in his article “Wohnen im Film” (“Living in film”) that the respective living situations of film characters are decisive for their anchoring in the diegetic level of action, the specific design of living space has so far been regarded as of little importance. Yet, it is precisely aspects such as the localisation in living space that provide essential information about the way in which the characters are embedded culturally, socially, psychologically and by way of identity. Thus, the different places and non-places of housing that are depicted in films represent the diverse cultural and geopolitical contexts in which they reside. Along with this, their memories are inscribed in the process of ensconcing, as memory also needs points of reference and tends towards spatialisation. The non-place hotel becomes, in this sense, a site of memory in whose rooms countless stories and individual memories are inscribed, which offer, in the act of remembering, a point of reference for the collective memory. Following the example of two Mozambican documentaries, Hóspedes da Noite by Licínio Azevedo (2007) and Grande Hotel by Lotte Stoops (2010) and a feature film A Costa dos Murmúrios (2004) by Margarida Cardoso, different dimensions of housing in former colonial hotels in Mozambique will be examined. New perspectives on the negotiation of forms of ‘inhabiting’ in colonial and postcolonial times as well as on forms of (re)viewing the past and the present in Mozambique are analysed.
