Resumo: | This report is divided into two chapters: The first chapter is part of the researchcomponent and is a review of the major developments in the world of anti-infectivesteroids. Over the last few decades, cases of pathogenic microbes resisting treatment havebeenon the rise. The misuse of available antimicrobial agents in both humans andanimalsand the decline in the development of new antimicrobial agents have led to anincreasein drug resistance to these types of agents. This led the World Health Organizationtodeclare antimicrobial resistance one of the top 10 global public health threats facinghumanity. Steroids are a vast group of compounds bearing a modified triterpeneskeleton that can have very different biological properties. Steroid compounds arecurrently used as therapeutic agents in many pathologies. Their structural flexibility, often good pharmacokinetic properties, and other properties make steroidscaffoldsdesirable candidates for drug research. Some steroid compounds, like squalamine, theceragenins, and various steroidal saponins, have already shown promisingantimicrobial activity. Thus, the aim of this study is to compile and summarize all themajor developments and advancements in the realm of anti-infective steroids andtheaspects of their structure-activity relationship. A total of 1255 different articles wereanalyzed, 268 of which were referenced in this study, encompassing various steroidgroups, intending to show the potential for these kinds of compounds inthedevelopment of anti-infectious agents The second chapter concerns my experiences serving as an intern in “FarmáciaPalmeira”, a community pharmacy located in Torres Novas, Portugal, betweenthe12thof September 2022 and the 28 th of January 2023, under the guidance of Dr. Raquel Vitorino. This chapter offers a glimpse into the inner workings of a communitypharmacy in Portugal and into the various areas of intervention of communitypharmacists. |
