Resumo: This work had as main motivation a reflection about the symbolical meaning of contemporary architecture, i.e. the relation between forms in which architecture express their time's spirit. A brief analysis of the meanings of the shapes in architecture, since Greeks to nowadays, in light of the book Arquitectura Occidental of Norberg-Schulz was chosen to be done. Also, there was the need to think about the state of the actual society and their main motivations, to understand the spirit of the present time. Without doing an exhaustive study about contemporary architecture, four works were analyzed: the chapel Tree of Life, the Saving Bank of Granada, the Seinäjoki library and the school of Zollverein. It was studied the context in which each one of these have been integrated, their formal and spatial characteristics and their symbolic meaning. Since they aren't today's paradigms, each work was a topic of different themes of reflection. The Chapel Tree of Life shows some inconsistency between form and its essence of a holy space. The Saving Bank of Granada explores the confrontation between the light and the structure, shown by its quite uniform language whose the main objective is the body dazzled by light. The Seinäjoki library is an experimental work where form and space fit together in a dynamic environment of delight and exploration of alternative ways of being in a space. Finally, the Zollverein School is the best example, among the four, of a fully coherent spatial essence, formal conformation and programmatic reinvention. In a final and personal reflection, it was considered that the symbolic has an immaterial nature, so there is a common code that is expressed in the forms of architecture but it isn't possible to read it as literally as in other historical periods. Today, the forms are the product of a collective motivation to overcoming, of searching for new sensations and relations of the body on the space. Today the symbolism of architecture comes from the interpretation and questioning of the essence of space.
