The nature of science at secondary education in the city of Corrientes, Argentina

Resumo: The present work started with the revision of plans and schedules of Natural Science courses from the 1st to the 6th grades of Secondary Education in “Brigadier General Pedro Ferré” High School in the city of Corrientes (Argentina), as well as of the textbooks used by teachers and students in the institution. Based on the state of art of the scientific approach in Secondary Education, and particularly in this educational establishment, the topics and features related with the Nature ofScience (NdC from its acronym in Spanish) were incorporated as a research methodology for a period of two years with the same group of students, beginning in 2013. The aim of this work was to assess the impact of the inclusion of contents related with NdC on students, either in terms of their academic achievement in courses related to hard sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, etc.), or in relation to their interests in pursuing higher education careers related to science in general. This is a new and innovative approach for the school level and for the whole province. Among other activities, a didactic unit was implemented, in which the sequence of classes proposed by the teacher to the students consisted of raising hypothesis about the topic presented, as well as analyzing data and presenting conclusions. The aforementioned didactic unit is located within the epistemological axis of science. Results obtained, after monitoring this process for two years, evince a positive impact of the NdC. This can be observed in the increased number of students approved in the Chemistry I course, as well as in the number of students interested in careers related to science.

This can be observed in the increased number of students approved in the Chemistry I course, as well as in the number of students interested in careers related to science.El presente trabajo de investigación se inició con la indagación de los planes de estudio y programaciones académicas de los espacios curriculares de Ciencias Naturales, desde el primero al sexto año del Nivel Medio (NM) del Colegio Secundario “Brigadier General Pedro Ferré” de la Ciudad de Corrientes (Argentina), como así también de los libros de textos utilizados por docentes y alumnos de dicha institución. A partir del conocimiento del estado actual sobre el enfoque de las ciencias en el NM, y en particular en dicho establecimiento educativo, se incorporó como metodología de investigación contenidos relacionados con la Naturaleza de la Ciencia (NdC) por el lapso de dos años con el mismo grupo de alumnos, dando inicio en el año 2013. El objetivo fue investigar el impacto que tiene la incorporación de estos contenidos sobre los alumnos, tanto en el rendimiento académico en asignaturas vinculadas con las ciencias duras (Matemática, Física, Química, etc.), como en el acercamiento de los mismos a carreras superiores relacionadas con las ciencias en general. Esta metodología es nueva e innovadora para el nivel educativo y en general para la provincia. Se implementó, entre otras actividades, una Unidad Didáctica (UD) donde la secuencia de clases propuesta por el docente a los estudiantes consiste en exponer diferentes hipótesis acerca de un tema presentado, como así también indagar datos y presentar conclusiones. Dicha UD está situada dentro del eje epistemológico de la ciencia. Los resultados obtenidos al cabo del seguimiento continuo de dos años al mismo grupo de alumnos muestran un impacto positivo de la NdC. Esto se manifiesta en un incremento de la cantidad de alumnos aprobados en la asignatura Química I, como así también en el número de alumnos interesados en carreras superiores relacionadas con las ciencias. O presente trabalho de investigação teve início com o questionamento do currículo e dos programas subjacentes aos planos curriculares de Ciências Naturais desde o primeiro até o sexto ano do Ensino Médio (EM) do Colégio Secundário “Brigadier General Pedro Ferré”, da Cidade de Corrientes (Argentina), assim como dos livros didáticos utilizados pelos docentes e alunos dessa instituição. A partir do conhecimento do estado atual sobre o enfoque das ciências no EM, em particular no citado estabelecimento de educação, foram introduzidos como metodologia de investigação conteúdos relacionados com a Natureza da Ciência (NdC) pelo período de dois anos com o mesmo grupo de alunos, tendo como inicio o ano de 2013. O objetivo foi investigar o impacto da incorporação destes conteúdos sobre os alunos, tanto no rendimento académico em matérias relacionadas com as ciências exatas (Matemática, Física, Química, etc…), como no interesse dos mesmos por cursos superiores relacionadas com ciências em geral. Essa metodologia é nova e inovadora para o campo educativo e para a região em geral. Foi implementado, entre outras atividades, uma Unidade Didática (UD) em que a sequência de aulas proposta pelo docente aos estudantes consiste em expor diferentes hipóteses acerca de um tema apresentado, assim como questionar informações e apresentar conclusões. A dita UD está situada no eixo epistemológico da ciência. Os resultados, obtidos ao fim do período contínuo de dois anos com o mesmo grupo de alunos, mostram um impacto positivo da NdC.
